UT vs. OSU - Am I really surprised?

SI/Peter Read Miller

With the absence of Vince Young this year, I can't say I was shocked that the Longhorns lost to the Buckeyes on Saturday. Prior to last year, losing the annual match-up against the ranked out-of-conference opponent seemed to be as reliable as gravity.

I held out hope that this year would be different, and not just because of all the star power present at the game. I know Matthew McConaughey and Lance Armstrong have become fixtures at UT football, but what was Jake Gyllenhaal doing there? Who knew he was a Texas fan? Anyway, one would think that having the title of defending National Champions would instill some amount of confidence into the team, and the first half of the game showed some promise. Erase that Pittman fumble and turn it into a touchdown, and who knows how that momentum would have affected the game. Too bad that potential never materialized. Or maybe OSU just stepped it up a notch.

Colt McCoy looked liked he handled the pressure of the big game pretty well. I only wish his offensive coordinator had more confidence in his game. Selvin Young and Jamaal Charles caught 84 yards in receiving compared to only 70 yards by the wide receivers. Arguably one of the best elite receiving corps in the nation, and the running backs catch more balls? Somethings really wrong with that statistic.

Well, I can still dream that Texas will dominate the rest of its schedule, and be a contender for a bid to the Fiesta Bowl.
Unfortunately, Troy Smith and his crew looked spectacular, putting on quite a show that proves why they're the top ranked team in the nation. A rematch would be sweet, but the 'Horns will really need to find some VY-sized leadership in the meantime.

My hats off to the Longhorns, though. The winning streak had to end sometime, and fortunately a National Championship was in that mix. At least we can handle winning and losing with some amount of dignity. What do the Buckeyes back in Columbus, OH do after a big win? They set fire to their town. According to the police officer interviewed for the story, "This happens on big games, so we were prepared for it." Remind me not to be in Columbus during any big games.

My brother was telling me that he's had friends that went to Ohio for games and reported the Ohio fans were openly hostile. I mean like getting in their faces, swearing and cursing and jabbing fingers hostile.
