I watched a bit of the Malaysian Grand Prix yesterday. Now, I won't go back into a rant about the inferiority that is NASCAR, but since I've still got F1 on the mind, I'll share this really nice commercial from Shell and the Ferrari Formula One racing team.
This also got me thinking about the whole environmental movement in the car industry. You'd think that at some point in the future, we'll all be driving some form of zero emission cars. Will that mean that gas as we know it will be gone, as well? What will oil companies like Shell be selling, and what will race cars run on?

My absolute favorite part of the commercial is just hearing that thing growl.
To answer part of your question, both the auto industry and the oil industry are looking into alternative fuels, because of environmental concerns (somewhat), but more because they know that the oil won't last forever. That's why you'll see most oil companies refer to themselves as energy companies now.
Now, whether or not they'd release an alternative fuel while they still had oil to sell us, I doubt it.
Yeah, I like the "growl," too. But will that roar of the engine be gone someday? Try listening to a Toyota Prius or any other hybrid car--they make little to no sound. It's actually caused a problem for the blind because they can't hear the Prius approaching when they try to cross the street.
We'll put a bell on the Prius. That sounds like a Fox News anti-liberal argument.
"Well Mr. Gore, since you had to have a more environmentally friendly car, blind people are now in more danger than ever! Coming up, why Al Gore hates the deaf, and puppies too!"
Actually, I heard that Prius thing on All Things Considered on NPR who some would consider the antithesis of Fox News. Go figure.
