HD DVD Formats

How many of you remember beta from the 80's. If you were a hi-fi kind of person back then, then you might remember that beta was the better quality at-home movie-watching and recording media format. While it was a much better quality, VHS won out. Why would such a thing happen? How come? Some of us here at the blog might immediately respond with Physics as the answer. Well believe it or not, I can actually say that answer would be correct ... if Rathna was your teacher. It is all about an orgy. The porn industry decided that VHS was going to be there choice for format and the rest is history.

Based on that history you may want to know that the porn industry has chosen Blue Ray to be there format of choice for high definition. (High definition porn is a scary thought.) So maybe your decision has been made for you.

There was an article in The New York Times a month ago about porn's jump into the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD battle addressing just this topic. It also raised the "scary thought" issue as apparently quite a number of pornstars are going back to their plastic surgeons to get all sorts of body work done after seeing all the details high definition pictures expose. This takes "What color is it? Is it sore to touch?" to a whole new level! Eeeeeeeeeew!

I, for one, think Blu-Ray should be the way to go, not because I want to go buy some high definition porn, but because those discs hold more data. And Blu-Ray just sounds cooler. Plus, I thought Betamax should have won that war back in the 80's, too. They had better picture quality, and the tapes were smaller. Sony doesn't get enough kudos for the innovations they create.

Porn is quite the media driver. The internet would not be quite the juggernaut it is today (it might be later) if it weren't for porn.

My parents held on to BETA as the format of choice many years beyonds its death. My dad claimed that we had to have BETA to watch hospital videos of heart sonigrams and that it was a superior format. My Dad always claimed things were superior even if they were not (like brick-blocks vs. LEGO).

Just like my stretch marks, I like the imperfections in my porn. However, I am not going to drop the dollar for new DVD-HD technology).

We won't have tangible ownership of media much longer. It will all be digital.
