I really shouldn't enjoy this story that much, but I do...

You've probably heard about Paris Hilton being sentenced to 45 days in jail for breaking the terms of her DUI probation. In response to this horrid abuse of judicial powers preying on this poor misunderstood woman, she has petitioned "The Governator" himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to grant her a pardon:

Paris Whitney Hilton is an American celebrity and socialite. She is an heiress to a share of the Hilton Hotel fortune, as well as to the real estate fortune of her father Richard Hilton. She provides hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives.
"Hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world." Yeah, I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Technically, the petition comes from someone else based on the wording of it which makes me throw up more than just a little bit.

That is sickening. Let me be a grumpy old man for a second. When teenagers, or whoever it is that thinks Paris is someone important, think it is not right to send her to jail then we are ... I don't know ... I guess we are all going to hell in a handbasket.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this type of hubris. They've certainly done a laughable job of trying to hide the fact that her only defense is celebrity. Dig this from the petition:

As depicted on Friday night's episode "Nancy Grace" on Headline News (May 4, 2007), countless celebrities have been "slapped on the wrist" for similar incidents recently. Nick Nolte, Mel Gibson, Tracy Morgan, Wynonna Judd, to name a few, were arrested and never did a day in jail after their initial arrests for drunk driving /DUI /DWI charges. Rappers Busta Rhymes and Eve still walk free after both being arrested for the same charges as Ms. Hilton just this past week. Brandy's California Highway accident, although no proof of DUI was evidenced in her accident, resulting in the death of a young wife and mother in California, yet Brandy walks free as of today, never doing any time and A WOMAN HAS BEEN KILLED most likely due to her reckless driving!

Yet, Paris Hilton did not hurt, injure, or kill anyone or anything, and yet she must do jail time.

The argument essentially says, "these celebrities got off, and Pairs is a celebrity, so why isn't she being let off the hook? The TV even said that celebrities only get a slap on the wrist."

I differentiate guilt and remorse as guilt being sorry for doing something, and remorse as being sorry for getting caught doing something.

She didn't hurt or kill anyone, and she has learned her lesson. She is sincere, apologetic, and full of regret for her actions as she explained tearfully to the Judge handling her case in court yesterday.

She may be sincerely remorseful because she is now facing punishment, but the repeated statement that "she didn't kill anyone" is a glaring indicator that she feels no guilt or responsibility. She did nothing wrong because no harm, no foul. However, the laws are in place to punish even if no one is hurt to prevent people from offending until they do hurt someone. Punishing someone after they have hurt or killed another is too late.

She is distraught and understandably afraid.

Yeah, that's the purpose of the punishment.

I don't think - or at least I hope - that Schwarzenegger won't pardon her. I can see that being a big negative for him, even in California.

And honestly, she doesn't need 45 days in jail as much as she needs 45 days in a third world country.

Honestly, I am not sure she will ever feel guilt as you have defined it. And while I am as tickled as Swany about her punishment, I am not sure it will do any good. I can see her doing her time and then throwing a huge get out of jail party where countless others drive off drunk. The party would praise her. I can see it making her into a martyr even though she wouldn't die. They could call it a marty instead of a party. They should let her off, but make her pay an exhorbitant fine ($500,000) that is not tax deductible that goes directly to establishing wells for villages that need water. This would eliminate the get out of jail marty.

Having seen upskirt candid pictures of Paris's bare crotch, I can only assume she will be very popular in jail.
