Yeah, that's what I was typing about with our all volunteer force. That was his biggest goof.
I was thinking about this from the soldier's perspective. The soldiers that I've talked to, particularly ones that have been in war, actually want to stay in Iraq. The reasons for this are two-fold.
One, they simply want to win. They want to uphold the reputation of our millitary and win, and I can truly dig that. If you engage in a fight, you finish it. (The difference being, I decide if I fight, they don't - the President does.)
Secondly, if they bug out then they feel as if all the soldiers who died or were injured did so in vain. If they get to stay and win, then those sacrifices are justified as they helped buy victory.
So, even though it may sound contrary to my earlier rant, I'm afraid that bugging out before victory or absolute defeat is not the right thing. Staying is a bad idea. Leaving is worse.
If we leave, we let down the soldiers who want to finish the job. If we leave, we allow another hard-line Islamic theocracy like the Taliban to move in. And if we leave, we will embolden other terrorists to attack us or our allies.
We never should have started in Iraq, but now we can't leave, which makes me all the more furious. I think the only just punishment (and yes, I mean punishment) is to stick a rifle in George W. Bush's hands and put him in Iraq. If he wants to fight, let him fight.
