Hey Pimp, I need shoe help.

Work doesn't let me access my webmail (the bastards) and I don't feel like typing this with my thumbs, so I'm entering my plea here. Swany, I need new shoes - something pimptastic that I can wear with nice jeans. I'd like to avoid something so metro it borders on homo (i.e. no roach killers), and I'm looking for something that I don't see on ever other pair of feet when I go out. Any suggestions? CAN YOU HELP A BROTHER OUT?

If you can't, I may just have to get Crocs.

Actually, I've been kicking around (tee hee) the idea of braving black and white wing tips for about 15 years now, but I've always been too chicken. Maybe it's time to set a new trend.

I can't fathom leaving a brother with no choice but to wear Crocs. Just the thought of it makes me a bit queasy. Let me think about it, and I'll give you some options later tonight.

Got a hot date, huh?

Alright, FG. Black and white wingtips may be great if you're really trying to make a bold statement that you like to buck the mainstream trends, but my guess is that most women would probably think you were a bozo. Obviously, I'm no ladies' man, but both my wife and the occasional article I've read confirm what I've thought for quite awhile--women make some pretty quick assumptions about a man based on his shoes. They tend to size you up based on how expensive your shoes look, how well kept they look, and the kind of style you're trying to pull off (not literal size--that whole big feet thing is a myth). I'm told your choice in watch and your manicure is the same way. The rest of the wardrobe is a bit harder to assess after that.

My advice would be to stick with something a bit understated, more classic, and you'll never go wrong. Chelsea boots are always a good look (and very convenient to pull off and on), as long as the toe isn't too pointy and the sole isn't too thin. Cole Haan makes a nice pair (Derby Chelsea) that goes for $245, although I'm sure you could look around at Nordstrom and find something a bit cheaper, but similar. Blundstone also makes some pretty reasonable boots that are a bit more rugged looking--you might recall I have a pair that have lasted me through rain, sleet, snow, and scorching sun for years. They usually run aournd $150, and they make a more dressier looking pair than what I have, but I can't seem to find them easily except online.

If you're not into boots, Banana Republic has some nice reasonably priced oxfords that would run $100-150. Looking on their website, the Thomas oxford is pretty understated but still nice looking. If you wanted something a bit more trendy, the Percy oxford sneaker actually isn't too out there.

And if you just wanted something casual, a simple pair of black Adidas Sambas will never go out of style and are a good look with a pair of nice jeans.

Anywho, hopefully this gives you some sort of starting place. The bottom line is to try and stay away from flashy attire, otherwise you run the risk of being like a guy with too much cologne. It's kind of hard to describe these things without just taking you around a mall or something. Heck, just drive up here some weekend--I'm sure Lemon would be more than happy to be your personal fashion consultant for a day.
